Yorktown (CVS-10) - museum ship, Charleston SC. Some debate over whether she would be reactivated?

Intrepid (CVS-11) - museum ship, New York City. Destroyed by nuclear attack.

Hornet (CVS-12) - reserve, Puget Sound. Redesignated CV-12 and recommissioned, 1986.

Lexington (AVT-16) - Auxiliary Aircraft Landing Ship, Pensacola. Redesignated CV-16 and overhauled for combatant service, 1986.

Bennington (CVS-20) - reserve, Puget Sound. Not reactivated?

Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31) - reserve, Puget Sound. Not reactivated?

Oriskany (CV-34) - reserve, Puget Sound. Recommissioned 1986.

Shangri-La (CVS-38) - stricken, Philadelphia. Reinstated to Navy List and recommissioned 1986.

Midway class

Midway (CV-41) - forward deployed, Seventh Fleet. On Indian Ocean/WestPac cruise at outbreak of war, recalled to Pearl Harbor and sunk by Soviet submarine off Hawaii, October 1985.

Coral Sea (CV-43) - active, Atlantic Fleet. At Norfolk preparing for Mediterranean deployment when war started. Sunk by Oscar-class SSGN in the Atlantic.

Forrestal class

Forrestal (CV-59) - active, Atlantic Fleet. Had just completed post-SLEP shakedown when war started. Lost to submarine attack in the Atlantic.

Saratoga (CV-60) - active, Atlantic Fleet. On Mediterranean deployment when war started. Became war loss.

Ranger (CV-61) - active, Pacific Fleet. Had recently completed year-long overhaul when war started.

Independence (CV-62) - undergoing SLEP, Philadelphia. Completed SLEP 1987, redeployed to Pacific, became war loss.

Kitty Hawk class

Kitty Hawk (CV-63) - active, Pacific Fleet. On Indian Ocean/WestPac deployment when war started. Damaged beyond repair by Backfire raid.

Constellation (CV-64) - active, Pacific Fleet. Had just returned from Indian Ocean/WestPac deployment when war started.

America (CV-66) - active, Atlantic Fleet. On North Atlantic deployment when war started. Became war loss.

John F. Kennedy class

John F. Kennedy (CV-67) - Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability, Norfolk. Under year-long overhaul which was a few weeks from completion when war started.

Enterprise class

Enterprise (CVN-65) - active, Pacific Fleet.

Nimitz class

Nimitz (CVN-68) - active, Atlantic Fleet. Returning from Mediterranean deployment when war started.

Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) - active, Atlantic Fleet. At Norfolk preparing for Complex Overhaul, due to begin in October, which was cancelled on the outbreak of war.

Carl Vinson (CVN-70) - active, Pacific Fleet. Had recently returned from Indian Ocean/WestPac deployment.

Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) - under construction, Newport News. Commissioned 1986.

Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) - under construction, Newport News. Commissioned 1989.

George Washington (CVN-73) - laid down 1986, incomplete at war's end.
